Ben Affleck Will Not Direct New Standalone Batman Movie

Ben Affleck Will Not Direct New Standalone Batman Movie

As rumored, Ben Affleck has bowed out of directing the upcoming standalone Batman movie, The Batman, the actor and film studio Warner Bros. confirmed today. He will still star in the movie.

“There are certain characters who hold a special place in the hearts of millions. Performing this role demands focus, passion, and the very best performance I can give. It has become clear that I cannot do both jobs to the level they require,” Affleck said in a statement to Entertainment Weekly.

His statement goes on: “Together with the studio, I have decided to find a partner in a director who will collaborate with me on this massive film. I am still in this, and we are making it, but we are currently looking for a director. I remain extremely committed to this project, and look forward to bringing this to life for fans around the world.”

Warner Bros. said in its own statement that it “fully supports Ben Affleck’s decision and remains committed to working with him to bring a standalone Batman picture to life.”

Earlier this month, Affleck said in an interview that he was unsure if he would direct The Batman, or whatever the movie ends up being called. “That’s the idea,” Affleck said at the time about directing the movie. “But it’s not a set thing and there’s no script. If it doesn’t come together in a way I think is really great I’m not going to do it.”

In the middle of December, Affleck said the finishing touches were being put on the script. “We’re on the right track with that and everything is coming together,” he said at the time. “We’re still finishing up a script. I’m very excited.”

There has been speculation that Affleck’s new, untitled Batman could come out in summer 2018, though this is not confirmed.

In August, Affleck released some early test footage of Deathstroke, who is confirmed as the villain in the movie. A week later, it was confirmed that Joe Manganiello had been cast in the role.

Affleck first played Batman in 2016’s Batman v Superman. He’ll play the character again in this summer’s Justice League.

As announced previously, the new Beauty and the Beast will feature a mix of songs from the original (listen to Emma Watson sing “Something There” here) and brand-new ones like “For Evermore.” Ariana Grande and John Legend are singing the duet “Beauty and the Beast” for the film.

Beauty and the Beast is directed by Bill Condon, who was behind the camera for the final two Twilight movies, as well as the Oscar-winning Dreamgirls. Disney has described the film as a “retelling” of the 1991 animated classic, tailored for a “contemporary audience.”

Insomniac Games Joins The Chorus Against Trump's Immigration Ban

Insomniac Games Joins The Chorus Against Trump’s Immigration Ban

Insomniac Games released a video today stating in no uncertain terms the company’s opposition to the immigration ban handed down by executive order from U.S. President Trump earlier this week.

In the video, Ted Price, founder and CEO of Insomniac Games, stood in front of the collected staff of the company’s Burbank, California office and delivered a speech that opened with “At Insomniac, we employ people of all national origins and religious faiths,” a fact he believes is core to Insomniac’s ability to “help make the world a better place through the stories we tell.”

“We at Insomniac games stand united in strongly opposing President Trump’s immigration ban,” Price said. “There’s no question that these orders will harm us as a company, and many of our team members. So we ask: is this the American way? Is discriminating based on religious faith or national origin American? Absolutely not. This is a deplorable, discriminatory act that we and many others across the nation believe is patently unconstitutional. We have been, we are, and we will always be a nation of immigrants.”

Price closes his speech with a call to action, asking viewers to contact local congress representatives to make their voices heard, and to support other organizations in creating opposition campaigns.

Price and the Insomniac team aren’t alone in these beliefs, adding their voices to a number of other industry representatives speaking out against the immigration ban. Earlier this week, the Entertainment Software Association (ESA) released a statement, that “urges the White House to exercise caution with regard to vital immigration and foreign worker programs.” Venture Beat has collected a host of other statements against the ban, including Vlambeer’s Rami Ismail, the official twitter account of the Game Developers Conference (GDC), Brianna Wu, Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella, Paul Murphy and the Dots team, and more.

Capcom Shares Fall After Resident 7 Ships Fewer Copies Than Past Games

Capcom Shares Fall After Resident 7 Ships Fewer Copies Than Past Games

On January 27, Capcom announced that Resident Evil 7 shipped 2.5 million copies to retailers following the game’s launch on January 24. The publisher said the horror game was off to a “solid start,” but it appears not everyone is impressed with the game’s commercial results so far.

As you can see in the image below from Bloomberg’s Gearoid Reidy (via PCGamesN), Capcom’s share value has fallen since the 2.5 million figure was announced. Shares of Capcom on the Tokyo Stock Exchange ended today, January 30, down by more than 3 percent.

The downward trend might be the result of investors being spooked by the 2.5 million figure, specifically, how it compares to past games in the series. Resident Evil 5 shipped 4 million copies in its first week, with Resident Evil 6 shipping 4.5 million during its first week.

Resident Evil 5 and Resident Evil 6 are Capcom’s best-selling games ever, with 7.1 million and 6.6 million sales respectively. These games of course have been on the market for a long time longer than Resident Evil 7, which is not even a week old.

Capcom forecasted Resident Evil 7 to sell 4 million copies before the end of its financial year, which ends March 31, 2017. Capcom has not announced a sales number for Resident Evil 7, only a shipment figure. We may know more soon, as Capcom reports earnings next on Wednesday, February 1.
